In Italy, the Techint Group is active in health care through the Istituto Clinico Humanitas and the Humanitas Group. Humanitas promotes, implements and manages health care initiatives, research and teaching.
The Humanitas Group includes the well-established, research-and-teaching focused Istituto Clinico Humanitas (ICH) hospital near Milan, built by Techint, and prestigious private accredited hospitals in Milan, Bergamo, Turin, Catania and Castellanza (Varese). The delivery of health care in these structures is based on Humanitas’ economically successful, patient-oriented management model, supported by state-of-the-art technologies.
In 2014, Humanitas established an international medical university integrated with the hospital near Milan. Innovative educational methods, the close integration with first rate facilities and cutting edge scientific research are the pillars of Humanitas University. 2015 marked the beginning of construction of the new Humanitas University Campus which was inaugurated in 2017.
The Techint Group -with other partners- enters the health services sector to promote, implement and manage health care initiatives.
Work begins on the Istituto Clinico Humanitas in Rozzano, Milan.
On March 4, the Humanitas hospital receives its first patient.
One year after its inauguration on March 10, the convention allowing all citizens covered by the Italian National Health Service (NHS) to benefit from the services provided by Humanitas comes into force, representing the first phase in the hospital's NHS accreditation procedures.
In June, an agreement is reached with Milan University's Faculty of Medicine and Surgery concerning teaching activities for the members of its Specialization School.
Fondazione Humanitas is established with the aim of supporting patients and their caregivers both practically and psychologically.
Humanitas Gavazzeni, a historical hospital in Bergamo, is acquired. In the following years different acquisitions build up a strategic network of hospitals and medical centers in Italy.
The process of NHS accreditation is completed for all hospital activity, both in terms of inpatient and ambulatory care. October sees the beginning of Milan University's first degree course in Nursing.
In September, the "Humanitas case study" is presented to the MBA students from Harvard University within the framework of its "Innovations in Health Care" course, part of the module concerning the planning and management of high-quality healthcare services.
In December, Humanitas becomes the first Italian general hospital to obtain the accreditation of excellence issued by the Joint International Commission, one of the world's most important bodies for the certification of hospital quality.
November sees the inauguration of the Humanitas Emergency and Radiotherapy areas.
Humanitas becomes a scientific institute of admission and care (Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico), recognized by the Ministry of Health and Lombardy's Regional Government as a center distinguished by the quality of its care and the capacity for transferring research results and innovations to daily clinical activity. Just in front of the hospital, works begin on the construction of the new Research and Teaching Center. In May, Istituto Clinico Humanitas is recognized as a teaching hospital for Medicine and Surgery for Milan University.
The Fondazione Humanitas for Research is established with the aim of supporting and orienting basic and clinical research in the immunology area and in the study and curing of illnesses with a serious social impact, including tumors, heart attacks and auto-immune pathologies. The foundation supports the training of young researchers in an international environment.
May sees the inauguration of the new Research and Teaching Center (an area of 20,000 sq.mts, which houses 30 laboratories for 300 researchers (both Italians and foreigners), 14 university classrooms for 400 students in Medicine and Surgery, Biotechnology and Nursing Sciences from Milan University, a multimedia library and a space designed for holding conferences Congress Centre).
Humanitas hosts the International Medical School in collaboration with the University of Milan School of Medicine, an international degree on Medicine and Surgery that unites academic training, hospital experience and laboratories for research. The Humanitas Cancer Center, a highly specialized center located in the core of the polyclinic, is established, dedicated to researching and curing cancer.
Since June 2014 Humanitas hosts HumanitasUniversity, a private non profit institution dedicated to the medical sciences and strictly interconnected with the Humanitas hospital. A new, non governmental academic institution devoted to medicine was created in line with the identity values of the Humanitas hospital in Milan and its research foundation.
Since the beginning of the year, Humanitas San Pio X, a prestigious clinic in Milan with 162 beds, eight operating rooms, two delivery rooms, 46 outpatient clinics, two endoscopy rooms and radiotherapy rooms, joins the network. Also in February, Gradenigo hospital, a multi-specialist hospital with an emergency department located in Turin, also becomes part of Humanitas.
The new Humanitas University Campus was inaugurated, hosting up to 1,200 students and with 20,000 square meters dedicated to teaching activities and student services.
In January 2018, Humanitas expanded its network by acquiring Clinica Castelli, a prestigious clinic in the center of Bergamo.
In September 2018, Mario Luzzatto Student House (residences for students) was inaugurated: 240 beds in single or double rooms and many communal areas like study rooms, a gym, a recreation space, a library, a terrace, a garden, a cafeteria and a laundry room.
Humanitas University and the Politecnico di Milano have partnered to create MEDTEC School - a new international 6 year degree programme, for the development of the doctors of the future, where medicine and engineering meet. The programme seeks to integrate the skills of a surgical doctor with those of a biomedical engineer to offer patients innovative and personalized treatments.
